THE CLIFF is a dramatic mystery about a police detective, who, along with a younger colleague of the opposite sex and of different opinion in general, tries to crack a bizarre and politically-charged case. The case involves mysterious incidents, accidents and deaths, which occur in connection with the much disputed construction of a hydro power plant in a sensitive and environmentally unique area at the foot of the Icelandic highlands.

HELGI MARVINSSON (35), a detective in the Reykjavík Police, is called in as an advisor on the case which at first looks like an accident: An excavator has fallen over the edge of a high cliff, in the middle of the night, when nobody was supposed to be working. The operator, found unconscious inside the machine, is rushed to intensive care but will not survive.

Big interests are at play. Environmentalists are fighting the proposed plant. The competition for getting sub-contracts amongst the locals has been fierce and revenge cannot be ruled out. But many believe that the cause of the incidents is to be found in the hidden world of the spellbound cliff that nobody should touch.

During the police investigation, new things surface all the time, but instead of helping to solve the mystery they tend to make it more complicated.

The life threatening incidents are usually preceded by the mysterious sightings of Ball Lightnings, which according to Icelandic myth is a foreboding of death, the moon of Urth, one of the three Nordic witches of destiny.

In the end, Helgi and his female partner manage to tie up most of the loose ends. Through the process of investigating the case Helgi is forced to face and accept the fact that he has made a point of denying and rejecting his own feelings, which has made him the effective cop he is, but also an emotional cripple, like so many of his fellow men.In short, he must evolve and grow as a human being to be able to move on in life. And he does.

Proposed by Pegasus Pictures this mystery miniseries is supported by RUV and Media Distribution. Under the direction of Reynir Lyngdal, the shooting started in August 08 in Iceland.
