European politicians are getting together to fight global warming. Public service broadcasting should help by educating citizens and broadening the public’s understanding of the need for individual and collective action.

During the first two weeks of December 2009, delegates at the UN Global Top Summit on Environment Issues in Copenhagen, will write the successor of the Kyoto Protocol. This event will attract substantial media attention and public interest. We propose the launch of a shared week during this period, involving as many EBU members as possible.

The multimedia package of EBU coproduced programmes shall be based on an objective and diverse platform, which will provide an un-biased and balanced contribution to the European debate about the issue. The aim is not to campaign selected opinions or follow specific political trends.

The package will contain a substantial number of coproduced TV-hours covering the genres Science, Documentary, Children, Factual, Fiction and Entertainment. It will contain cross media activities and a sophisticated web-site where citizens would be able to access and share information about global warming and the challenges linked to climate change. There will also be radio activities such as ex. documentary and feature programmes.

35 members have shown interest in the project and in the coming months the package will be researched and developed further, together with these members.

The result of the development work will be presented at the EBU General Assembly in the summer of 2008 in Budapest, in order to ask for letters of commitments from the members. This would leave one and a half years for production.
