This Exchange is a pool of Classical Music and Dance programmes offered by members in exchange of the rights to broadcast all other programmes free.

Digital and satellite channels offer a new opportunity for music and dance at better airing times. These new slots are rarely heavily funded and new supplies at low cost are often welcome. The European Classics pool does not intend to replace the usual distribution system; it is a supporting source when more programmes are needed. It is restricted to the public service televisions members of the EBU.

The general trend nowadays is to hyper consumerism: watch and forget. Classical music programmes have a much longer existence. Once they’ve completed their first commercial life, some of them still deserve broadcasting attention. In some cases their value increases with age. For the artists involved in these films, for all those who devoted lots of time and talent to make them, a new opportunity to be broadcast on a European scale is meaningful.
The potential “music and dance” catalogue of the EBU members is much underrated.

The European Classics throw a new light on the wide range of programmes available on our tapes. With over 37 programmes, the pool gives a fairly good picture of European music and production during the last decade. The celebrated Ruhr Festival organised by Gerard Mortier is already represented by 6 programmes. Artists like René Jacobs, Krzysztof Penderecki, Andreas Scholl, Krysztian Zimmerman, Mstislav Rostropovich, Maria Joao Pires perform in the catalogue.
