Have you ever heard about the secret bunker in Slovenia where top leaders of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia planned to hide in case of a nuclear war?
Do you know how the “free city” Christiania in Copenhagen could survive the plague of hard drugs? Have you ever seen the fascinating archive pictures of the construction of the Corinthian Canal in Greece?

All these the landmarks of modern Europe are portrayed in the collection Memorial Sites.

These 28’ documentaries are based on strong editorial choices: contemporary witnesses, archives and contemporary footage - and the narration positions the site within the European context. Since 2002, EBU members have produced and aired four series.
The first series brought nine broadcasters together to report on industrial sites such as Nokia in Finland, the Lego factory in Denmark, or the workers town Nowa Huta in Poland.
The second series, involving seven broadcasters, was about social-political places such as the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, or the Gdansk shipyards.

The third series, with ten broadcasters on board, portrayed famous infrastructures such as bridges, dams, harbours or housing projects.

And finally, the fourth Memorial Sites series, coproduced by nine broadcasters has been dedicated to “secret places”, places that have remained completely or almost unknown for a long time, but which played a significant role in the history of the 20th Century. A whole range of lively programmes for (re)discovering the places that forged the Europe we know today.
