According to hazard investigations, natural hazards cause about 40 billion US dollars each year in physical damage.

During the past, two decades as many as 3 million lives have been lost as direct result of hazardous events. Another 800 million people have suffered the loss of property or health.

At the same time we know that natural processes we call "hazardous" have existed throughout the Earth's history. Even the most destructive geologic events are part of the normal functioning of our dynamic planet.
Moreover, they have made the planet habitable. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes for example are part of the system of plate tectonics that has formed the continents and shaped the landscape.
Water and wind cause flooding, landslides and storms, but they also replenish the soil and sustain life.

"Natural Hazards" is an exciting and challenging topic for education television.
