Some places in the world look completely different from others. The geology and climates in the world have created many types of landscapes, but not all are suitable for humans to live in. Some such regions have become inhabitable, however, for different reasons. Those living there have had to adapt to their environment. Why do people stay in these difficult regions? How have they adapted to their environments and how can they survive? Are they aware of the dangers, and how do they deal with them? These are the key questions. The series relates to scientific, geographical, social and cultural issues, profiling children living in their extraordinary environments.

Topics and locations:
• Living below sea level in the Netherlands
• Living on top of the mine in the north of Sweden
• On the edge of a volcano in Naples
• Mountain dwellers in the high Alps in summer
• Mountain dwellers in the high Alps in winter
• Nomads in the Sahara
• Mudslides in Moroccan valleys
• Wet feet (Polish waterlands)
• The Polish waterlands
• Forest fires in southern France

Each participating broadcaster will produce one programme on such an area, under the guidance of an executive producer, and receive the others for free.
