Everybody is interested in sex. Everybody has opinions, fears and secret thoughts about it.

Human sexuality existed before religion, before politics, before money, before philosophy. The sexual instinct is one of the strongest instincts within the human being, as strong today as at the birth of mankind. The culture of a particular society and what is considered normal, abnormal or criminal is very much determined by the perception and organization of sexuality. Sexual behaviours considered normal in one society may be intolerable in another. Pleasures accepted and permitted at one stage of a society may well be prohibited at another. In short, primal as it may be, human sexuality is also socially constructed.

Taboo is made up of portraits of people in various countries, who express their needs and feelings, and in so doing also illustrate the attitudes of society at large.

Taboos are explored in relation to the body, to age, religion, desire, and even the law, in a documentary style, by directors chosen very carefully for their talent and their ability to inspire trust in the protagonists.

Each participating broadcaster has produced 2 x 12’ portraits under the guidance of an executive producer, and two of these will be put together into each loosely themed episode. The broadcasters who produced the items and contributed to the modest central budget receive the whole series for free.
